Time management is as an important part of any successful home business as any corporate job, perhaps even more so. Often, individuals that work from home are subjected to demands that someone with an office job would not b. It is important to manage your time to give your business the time and attention it deserves. Here are some tips for staying on track:

1. Create a daily to-do list, in fact, make two!
Start each day by writing down what you would like to accomplish both in your business and personal lives. Keep each list separate, but beside each other so you can see your complete list. Make sure that each item as well as the whole list is reasonable, though I’m sure you would like to grow your business by 50%, and achieve world peace, that may be a little much for one day. One way to check if your list is reasonable is to assign each task an estimated time frame you think it would take to accomplish it, then schedule your day.

As you accomplish things on your list mark them off. This lets you see, at a glance, what you have done and what you still need to do.
If you don’t accomplish everything on your list, the next morning write those items at the top of your lists and only add new items you think you can accomplish to the new day’s list.

2. Weekly planning session

Take time at the same time every week to review what you have accomplished for the week, what you need to accomplish in the coming week, as well as what you did well and what you can improve on. Sometimes, just taking time to reflect gives you an insight that you would have otherwise missed. This session also provides an opportunity to get an overview of your week to come in perspective. If you look at your calendar to see all things on the horizon, then you can better schedule your time around it.

3. Determine your work hours and stick to them
Determine the hours a day you are willing to devote solely to work, and make sure it is uninterrupted time. No matter where your office is located, it is important to stay focused on the task at hand and interruptions (even scheduled ones) tend to disrupt the flow of work.
It also is important that you stop working after you have put in your time, use a timer if necessary. This is important so that you have a chance to get to all of the items that you put on your personal to-do list that morning, spend time with your family and friends. Remember the reasons why you are working!

4. Schedule Breaks
I know, I just said that you should minimize interruptions, however breaks provide you with an important opportunity to come up for air and relax for a moment. Just because you aren’t punching a time clock, doesn’t mean that you don’t deserve breaks. Sometimes letting your mind relax for a moment actually can leave you feeling inspired and ready to get back to work.

5. Stay Focused
There will always be tasks around your home that you can do instead of working, however it is important that these tasks stay in their scheduled times. Take time to explain to family members that while you are working interruptions must be kept to a minimum.
